The Byzantine Empire 1000 -1100

The Byzantine Empire had suffered a serious defeat at the hands of the Seljuk Turks at Manzikert in 1071 and had lost control over areas. However, it could be argued that by the mid 1090s the Empire under Alexius Comnenus had consolidated its position. He had improved the military capacity of the Empire which had been undermined during the reigns of previous emperors. Furthermore, the Muslims were waging war amongst themselves following the deaths of various rulers which had created a power vacuum in northern Syria.
